Habits of keeping too many things and living amongst piles of clutter usually don’t evolve overnight. Unfortunately, this means it is likely going to take a while to overcome those habits. You CAN learn new tips and tricks though. Here are a few tricks for getting organized.
The less you own, the tidier it will be. I can’t overstate this! When in doubt, throw it out.
Do careful of what you let come into your space. Every item that comes into your home is another item you will have to eventually get rid of or live with. Be a possession snob. If it isn’t better than what you already own, don’t bring it in.
When something comes in, something has to go out. Each item you own has a cost to it. You might think it’s free, but it isn’t. It costs you space, which is a much more valuable resource than we realize.
Don’t worry about what happens to your old items. I know it seems lovely to think that your old belongings are going to go to a new home that appreciates them, but at the end of the day, you just need it out of your home. If getting it out of your home means it has to go to the landfill, so be it. If adding to the landfill makes you feel bad, remember that feeling when you are thinking of buying something new.
It can be really helpful to work with a professional organizer, especially at the beginning. A professional organizer, with a background in psychology can help you work through why you have the clutter-related habits you have and guide you through learning new habits.
