Art-Based Grief Support
Art-Based Grief Counselling
When you can’t find the words to express the pain or the confusion, using something other than words, like art, can give you the outlet you need to make sense of your loss.
With Art-Based Grief Support, I bring my bin of art supplies, and guide you through creating representations of your story. This is not about making a masterpiece. This is about expressing what is bottled up on the inside. Absolutely no art experience or talent is needed.
Art-Based Grief Counselling, like art in general, is about expressing whatever is on the inside. I studied art as an part of my psychology degree. One of my favorite past times is putting on music with a canvas or sketch pad in front of me and seeing what happens. Can’t draw a stickman? No worries! Seriously.
How Does Art Help with Grief?
Art can be a powerful tool for coping with grief and loss. Expressing emotions through art can help individuals process their feelings and provide a sense of release. Here are a few reasons why art can be helpful for those experiencing grief:
Art offers a creative outlet for emotions: Grief can be a complex and overwhelming emotion that is difficult to express through words alone. Art provides an alternative way to express these emotions and can help individuals release feelings that they may not be able to articulate verbally.
Art encourages mindfulness and self-reflection: Creating art requires focus and attention, which can help individuals become more present in the moment and focused on the task at hand. This can be a helpful practice for those who are struggling with anxiety or racing thoughts related to their grief.
Art can provide a sense of control: Grief can often leave individuals feeling helpless and out of control. Engaging in art can provide a sense of control and agency over the creative process, which can be empowering and therapeutic.
Art can help individuals connect with others: Creating and sharing art can be a way for individuals to connect with others who are also experiencing grief. Sharing art can also open up conversations about grief and provide a sense of validation and support.
Art can promote healing and growth: Through the process of creating art, individuals may discover new insights and perspectives on their grief, which can promote healing and growth. Art can also serve as a tangible reminder of the progress that has been made in the grief journey.
In conclusion, art can be a powerful tool for coping with grief and loss. It offers a creative outlet for emotions, encourages mindfulness and self-reflection, provides a sense of control, helps individuals connect with others, and promotes healing and growth. If you are struggling with grief, consider exploring different art forms and see how they can help you process your emotions and move forward in your healing journey.
